Hoop House Gardening

Apr. 21, 2010

You have to relish the small victories. I finally finished my little hoop house for the vegetable garden row, and just in time. We’re about to have another cold spell. It works darn well too. It was downright chilly by the time I moved my flats in there, but the ground was still toasty warm.

If you’re not too handy, don’t let it scare you. If I can do it, you can. I cant imagine how the same structure retails for $490. Albeit sturdier, and prettier, but come on… its broccoli.

  • A Raised Bed
  • PVC Pipe
  • Hacksaw or pipe cutter
  • Clamps
  • Screws and a drill
  • String
  • Plastic

Most of this is common sense. The biggest trouble I had was bending the pvc, because my beds are a really narrow 2.5 feet across. There’s also a mathematical equation to figure the length of pvc pieces according to the width of your bed. Honestly, you can probably get away with eyeballing this. Bend one, measure it and cut all your pieces the same length. Screw the clamps onto the bed, and put your pvc through the holes deep enough to be sturdy. Tie a piece of pvc across the top and cover with plastic.  I held it down with bricks. Simple. and its all portable too.

      Emily,

Your stuff should do really well in one of those. When I watered in there, I also sprayed the inside of the plastic to keep the humidity up, though I’m guessing you dont have a problem with humidity where you are!

What you said put a huge smile on my face, thank you so much!

      Best of Luck!
