Plant Sale

May. 16, 2010

plant-saleFriday and Saturday, I had my first ever Plant Sale! My neighbor offered me space in her driveway to enrich her garage sale, so I did no marketing, put up no signs and depended on her traffic alone. Let me first say, it was a blast!

I didn’t have much variety, but what I did have was nicely potted in trade #1 size nursery containers, offering Feathered Reed Grass, Red Bearded Irises in bloom, and Autumn Joy Sedum. I figured I’d also offer some of the vegetables I had started (greens and a few tomatoes).

The Irises were of major interest, mainly because people know and love irises, also because I made sure that each one had either a flower, or a bud.  Followed by the sedum that grew in perfectly from early spring divisions and filled the pots so nicely. I started my pricing at $3 each and cut a deal with anyone who looked hesitant. Either the grass was divided into too small of sections, or people just didn’t realize how beautiful and tall it could grow, but no on really cared for it. A photo might have helped.  And well, vegetables… I didn’t sell a single one even at 50 cents.

I am thrilled to report that I made $120 in just 2 days, about 10 hours of chatting with friends and neighbors and meeting local people over two beautiful days.

With experience under my belt, understanding what sells and what doesn’t and at what price point, I’m ready to grow a whole lot more, just for future plant sales. If it looks nice, larger and fuller, filling the pot nicely, preferably with a flower, it should sell well… Now to find something I can propagate A LOT of. I also learned, that I have the best neighbors a person could hope for.
