Steps of Seed Germination

February and the promise of spring overexcites me, longing for an END to the dreary winter. My mistake has always been starting too soon, and starting too many seeds in one tray – creating a big mess and a lot of dead plants. But I’ve come to the conclusion that there are only 2 real questions to answer… ‘How’, and most importantly ‘When’?

Crimson King Maple Seeds: Part 3

Early this spring, I found a ton of crimson king maple tree seedlings sprouting all over the front yard. I dug them up and planned on raising some beautiful Crimson King Maple trees. The 40 that I collected had a great start but over the course of the summer, only 4 made it. No good. Here’s what I learned from my effort.

Tomato Plant Progress

Crimson King Maple Tree Pt 2

Its just two weeks after the discovery of my little Crimson King Maple seedlings growing all over the front yard, and I’ve already learned new things. It’s true that they don’t all come true from seed, actually just a fraction of the seeds will produce a tree with deep read color. Luckily they’re quick to produce that color.

Crimson King Maple Tree Seeds

If you have any maple trees in your yard you’re sure to have noticed, and even cursed the “helicopter” seeds. They fall all over the place threatening to grow trees where they land, as if we didn’t have enough to weed. It wasn’t until last year, when I started learning about tree and shrub propagation that I started looking more closely at our majestic deep red Crimson King Maple Tree.

Seed Germination & Growing Indoors

Growing indoors, what a joy, especially in February and March when Chicago winters drag on and on. I have to admit, I’m a chronic mister. Its sort of an addiction… Even if you can’t spend all day hovering over your seedlings, there are few tips to keep them thriving.
