Winter Planter Boxes

Dec. 8, 2011

Winter Planter Boxes are beautiful and easier to do than you’d think. This year, instead of leaving a bunch of empty pots on the patio, I converted them ALL to winter planter boxes. What a difference it made. Dull and drab became festive and fab! And it didnt take very long. And when that was done, we used the left overs to fill my window box. Now, Winters not so bad when I look out my window!

Here’s some pointers for great winter planter boxes

Take a walk around yor yard and gather evergreen material, like juniper, cedar, cypress and soft pines for the bulk and the ‘skirt’. You’ll also need some fancy stuff to dress it up. We gathered dried hydrangea and sedum flowers to either use plain or made it pop with some red, gold or silver spray paint. Twigs from a red twig dogwood look great in the center of winter containers. I even fudged this by cutting some of the hardened trumpet vine and spraying it red (ive seen it sprayed white in the nurseries) And whats winter without berries? A trip to the dollar store filled that quota! PLUS we scored some white doves to tie to the dogwood branches, what a nice touch.

To make winter planter boxes, start with the tall pieces, like juniper. Place them in the center if you’re going to be working around the planter so it looks good from any angle. Place them in the back if you only want a front view. Then design the ‘skirt’, the plants that hang over the planter to cover the edges of the box. Cedar, cypress, soft pines work well here. Then fill in with your color to make it really pretty. Its as easy as that.
